A few weeks ago David and I began our common daily routine it was early in the morning and I was in the living room with the kids . David was sound asleep in the bedroom , exhausted from an all night of work.
Something unusual and strange happened, yet I didn't think much of it until later. David's Dad called me and said that a detective had just left their house and she was looking for David. I was surprised and asked Dean (David's Dad), " Did she mention why she was looking for David?" He said that there had apparently been fraudulent activity linked to our IP (Internet Protocol) address and the police were investigating this. I wasn't too surprised because with David's online business the clients sometimes are involved in things that are unknown to us. They simply purchase our services and go on there way using them for whatever their needs may be. Occasionally detectives from other states send us subpoena's asking for information about a specific client that we have, and then gather the information and give it to them. I figured this was the typical issue that I had seen before. Before I hung up the phone Dean's last words were, " you guys aren't involved in anything illegal are you"? I said, " no, I don't think so".
I went into the bedroom and thought I should mention to David that a detective was just at his parents house and is looking for him. She knew our new address and I figured if she was going to come by our apartment David should be awake and alert.
David then called his Dad and I left the bedroom to go to the living room where the kids were. After a minute or so David jumped out of bed faster than I had ever seen him get up in the past three years of our marriage. He was frantically rummaging through the apartment trying to find his clothes and he looked a little worried. It began to cross my mind ... why is he so worried and I then recalled his Dad's last question, "you guys aren't involved in anything illegal are you"?
I began to get a little concerned but still continued playing with the kids in the living room. David rushes in the living room from the computer room and he tells me , " Marisa , you better pack up everything that is important to you". My jaw dropped to my chest and I thought WHAT? What kind of man did I marry and I never saw it coming? I am about to pack my kids up and everything that is important to me and we are going to be on the run? With all of these thoughts running through my head I found David in the computer room and asked him if he was serious and what is going on?
He told me that if the detective is investigating fraudulent activity from our IP then possibly they will need to confiscate our computers to get more information. Confiscating computers is apparently common in the police world. David then furthered explained that if I had anything important to me I needed to back it up as I may never see it again. We still are laughing about this miscommunication.
Wow, what a relief when I heard "back" instead of "pack"!

haha that would freak me out haha! glad it wasn't anything bad. and that it was just a misunderstanding of words. That would suck to be in the run haha.
Ha Ha, hope everything turned out alright. They would have to have a warrant to take your computers anyway. They didn't have one did they?
They were wanting information regarding one of our clients. Not our own personal computers. Unfortunately with the bureaucracy of the government procedures they couldn't give me the subpoena fast enough (6 months after the illegal activity) for me to find any information on the client as he was already long gone. The detective told me about all the procedures to get a subpoena and it took to long, I wasn't able to give them any information on this request.
If they would of asked for information sooner I could of helped them out. The detective agreed with me that it's frustrating trying to investigate something so old since it's nearly impossible to look up IP addresses on servers from that long ago. Data on active servers normally are lost/deleted/overwritten within 1 month anyways. They need to confiscate them within a 1-4 weeks....
